Trans-Siberian Railroad journey to Red Gate

Two artists who plan to arrive for a Red Gate Residency in May via the Trans-Siberian Railroad are coordinating an art project along their route from Moscow to Beijing.

"The Trans-Siberian Arts Centre (T-SAC) is a not for profit travelling art space initiated by artists britt salt + jon hewitt, Directors of KITCHEN. This project will instigate exhibitions, performances, and events during a 6 day train journey from Moscow to Beijing to support and promote new emerging art internationally."

"We now have 3 main events happening on over the 6 day journey from Moscow to Beijing; a postcard exhibition of over 180 emerging international artists, New Works a curated series of film/video works by nine emerging Australian and UK based artists which will be free to view for Trans-Siberian passengers and a series of curated performances by 6 young Australian emerging artists which will be re-enacted on select train platforms along the journey route."

Soon-to-be resident Sam Jablon participates in a show in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, called "Brief History." The project attempts to synthesize art, technology, and politics to present a relevant commentary on our contemporary global society. On the website, it is described as bringing together "contemporary works responsive to the unfolding events in the region and the larger global happenings of the day. The show will be momentarily materialized in the intimate setting of a villa in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, and subsequently posted online." Sam's work will be performed on March 19, if anyone happens to be passing through this region.

Dr. Lisa Anderson, past resident, installs "Precious"

Past resident Dr. Lisa Anderson is going to Denmark to install the sculpture "Precious", composed of thousands of wine glasses, at its sand dune site in Byron Bay. On her website, she explains that "The special qualities of the mathematical formulae of repeated unit and the reflective surface of the 3,000 glass bowls represents a life of preciousness upside-down."

"This work is a series of 30 images created by Lisa Anderson while undertaking an artist-in-residency at Redgate Studios in Beijing during 2010. This Thursday evening, Liao invited all the Red Gate residents and some of his artist friends to a jiaozi dinner at his courtyard house. The savory Chinese dumplings were cooked in a pot over an open fire.

Adam, resident artist Anya's young son, was enthused by the process.

Past resident Gabrielle Courtenay's new show "Colliding Worlds" opens on the 8th of March at The Depot II Gallery, on Danks Street in Waterloo, New South Wales.

Current resident Alex Gibson has initiated the following project in his Tuanjiehu neighborhood residency space ::

Tuánjié space 团结空间 is a short-term project to develop critical discourse and practices with artists, curators and writers. It is based in Tuánjiéhu, CBD Beijing, but it is not limited by its physical location. Some effort is being made to engage with broader global communities to establish a network of rational, critical debate and artistic practice. December Welcome Dinner & Tea

Following our standard December welcome dinner at the delicious little restaurant in Feijiacun near the studios, interested artist traveled to Liao Rang's studio in nearby Hegezhuang for a tea tasting. Liao showed us around his studio (complete with dark room and sculpture facilities) and then schooled us on the best green, black, and da hong pao tea of his hometown Fujian.

This November Open Studio featured contributions by artists from Austria, USA, and Australia. We are really excited to have a heavy influx of artists experimenting with sound in their artwork as well in the last few months.

Artists and visitors stayed out of the cold by jumping between warm studios to see what had been done on recent residencies.

Red Gates latest show kicked off with help from the Australian Ambassador to China, Dr. Raby. The events included a welcome by curator and project coordinator Catherine Croll as well the auctioning off of two steel panels from the Australian Pavillion in Shanghai. Proceeds went to the Xingren Primary School in Sichuan and the Epenarra School in the remote Northern Territory of Australia.

In the middle of August we took another trip to the Great Wall by the Commune. A piece of the wall covered with vegetation, chirring cicadas and floating butterflies of all colours welcomed us. After having climbed ridiculously steep steps, we arrived at the old watchtower enjoying a view over the mountains and the wall running across them.

Group trip to the Commune at the Great Wall

The 20 minute hike from the Commune (which showcases art from Red Gates collection) leads up to a special unrestored portion of the Great Wall close to Shuiguan. November and December resident Nancy Lovendahl hosted an action packed guest workshop at CAFA - City Design School in Shunyi, Beijing, just a short distance from our studio/lofts. Nancy's workshop, for third year industrial design students, focused on surface design and texture.

Canadian residents Cathy Busby and Garry Kennedy participated in an artist talk called “Artists Make Books” organized by Michael Eddy of Vitamin Creative Space. The talk was hosted at the innovative art exhibition “The Shop” [please check out Vitamin’s blog for a video of the talk]. Garry talked about the context of publishing of books by artists that he initiated at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in the late 60s that continued through the 70s. He went on to discuss books made collectively by students in his Printed Matter class over a 20 year period. Cathy I talked about some examples of her matter including a her limited edition book of posters in Halifax and a ongoing series [visible below]. Garry also touched on an upcoming project with MIT Press about NSCAD 1968 - 78, that he's approaching as an artist's publication.

Dumpling Adventures

Friend of the program Samuel and resident artist Alison MacDonald generously organized an excursion to a family member's village just outside of Beijing. The adventure was complete with hiking mountains, picking our own veggies, learning and making dumplings from scratch, a bonfire, and hot coals under our communal bedding!

A little bit of water...

Our Bei Gao studio lofts got a little more water than usual when the typhoon that ravaged Taiwan dumped about 50cm of water in less than 2 hours time. The whole Bei Gao community suffered some pretty heavy flooding.

We were very lucky to have no permanent damage to any of the facilities (or art works), and a lot of friendly hands, buckets and brooms that got things pretty well taken care of in just a few hours.

The exhibition "Triple Exposure" by Varda Carmeli presents three series of photographs:

Beijing - An Image About to Change - An inside look at scenes and lifestyles in the ancient, traditional quarters called hutongs that have survived up to the present day and a moment befor the change has occurred.

Placards - An outside view of reality and fantasy images imported into a Beijing under transformation.

Whispering Smoke - Photographs of mystic traditional ceremonies which were taken during the Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Guatemala (Chichicastenango, Antigua).

Varda Carmeli (Born in Israel) is a multidisciplinary artist (painting, installation and photography).

Denise Keele-bedford has been travelling to China and Beijing since 2002. She had her first residency with Red Gate Gallery in 2003 when she was introduced to the lively contemporary art scene of Beijing.

Now, with her own studio at Suo Jia Cun in the North East of Beijing, Denise continues her art practice in China including participating with Chinese and International artists’ exhibitions, other art related activities, and coordinating exhibitions.

Currently, Denise is coordinating an exhibition to be opened by Australian Ambassador Geoff Raby at Imagine Gallery on Sunday March 8th, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

In the following radio interview, Denise talks about her experiences in coming to China and Beijing, the people, locations, artists and exhibition involvement.

Shangri-La and the Everyday Object

Australian Artist Tony McDonald has recently returned to Sydney from a month-long stint at the Red Gate Artist Residency program in Beijing. Tony is Head Teacher, Fine Arts at the Sydney Gallery School, Meadowbank TAFE College.

Tony completed over thirty small paintings that constitute a diary of objects used in daily life during his stay at the ‘Shangri-La’ Bei Gao studios. The chosen objects were selected largely by chance, rather than a conscious search for imagery. From money to soap, a piece of coal to a light bulb, these common objects are isolated from their original context and assume a multitude of associated meanings in the grid of forty-five small paintings. This is a record of the artist’s experience, a meditation on what is made in China, the world’s factory, and what sustains and supports daily life.

Travelling the Unfamiliar

For Australian artist Susan Andrews, travelling by bike, bus, taxi and subway around an unfamiliar city can be both exciting and bewildering. Experiencing the unfamiliar, we are opened to new worlds.

A map is required in all instances when travelling in a foreign environment: first in the search, and location of where one is heading then a decision is made regarding how to navigate towards is the best way in proceeding forward. Our perception of space, time and distance is conditioned from our own daily routine in our own familiar environment. When we step into another unfamiliar space our perceptual sense of time and distance and in some instances our sense of scale appears to be challenged.

While maps can inform us of where we are in space they also denote boundaries, borders; the edges of eroding land mass and the creeping tentacles of the city freeways. Weather maps inform us of the prevailing winds, rain and sun and the associated daily temperatures. While we relied once on paper maps to map the earth and sky we now have satellite maps that can give us a ‘birds eye view’ of distance, we can zoom in on a computer and catch close-ups of land mass, flat planes and meandering rivers.

Whilst in Beijing for a month-long Red Gate Artist Residency, Susan completed a series of works on rice paper that deal with the concept of mapping the unfamiliar. The works reference maps in the use of linear explorations of boundaries and subtle masses of form.Susan will develop these works back in Sydney into an ongoing series. Susan is currently a Lecturer in Painting and Drawing both at the National Art School and at the College of Fine Arts, University of NSW.

Red Gate International Artist Residency Program

Invites you to a performance by one of our international artists:

Daniel Davidson, from America, will enact the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching using sixty common, recycled bricks.
By placing four hexagrams together, he has formed a quadrangle of hexagrams. In re-arranging all of the hexagrams into quadrangles, he will transform the first quadrangle, through all, to the sixteenth quadrangle, using only sixty bricks. None of the transforming bricks are ever left out in this process. Nor are any added to advance the process.
